SUMMARY

This Transportation Planner II position is housed in the Planning Section of CDOT’s Planning and Design Division, and will help represent CDOT in integrated planning and policy efforts. These efforts include City-wide and small area/corridor-focused plans and studies, transportation policy development, ordinance reviews and updates, and a wide variety of special projects.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead or support CDOT tasks related to major City-wide planning efforts, including, but not limited to, the 2040 Charlotte Future Comprehensive Plan, the Strategic Mobility Plan, the Charlotte Streets Map, the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), and Transit System Planning efforts, as required.

2. Represent CDOT on small area/corridor-focused integrated land use and transportation plans and studies; includes implementing collaborative planning procedures and schedules, providing substantive input to relevant plans, reviewing all documents/procedures, and ensuring that CDOT policies/objectives are reflected in planning processes and documents. 

3. Lead or support planning efforts and special projects in Center City, as needed. 

4. Lead or provide planning support for short-term/focused planning efforts and other special projects as they arise; including, but not limited to, tours, conferences, grant applications, policy memos, research, presentations, developer requests, and other special projects, potentially with short turnaround times. 

5. Serve, as necessary, on a variety of standing and ad hoc staff teams charged with intra- or inter-agency reviews of program or project implementation. 

6. Perform, as needed, data collection, data provision, and data analysis for integrated planning efforts, including coordination of input from other relevant staff. 

7. Apply strong multi-disciplinary land use and transportation skills, computer skills, sophisticated communication abilities, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting on a wide variety of projects. 

8. Responsively engage in oral and written communication both one-on-one and in group settings with the public, staff from other agencies, consultants, and professional peers about the City’s transportation-related plans, policies, and projects. 

9. Understand, communicate, and apply City transportation policies in all relevant work efforts within the wide variety of contexts within our community. 

10. Perform related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of urban and transportation planning.

• Ability to apply strong multi-disciplinary land use and transportation skills, computer skills, sophisticated communication abilities, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting on a wide variety of projects
