Some of the nation’s best-known natural and historical features mark the landscape of central Virginia including the Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. They surround the Lynchburg metropolitan area, a full-service urban area with a vibrant downtown, quiet neighborhoods, good schools, quality healthcare, and low crime rates. The region’s five institutions of higher learning and charming villages are nestled in the Blue Ridge’s foothills and the banks of scenic, accessible rivers. Long a railroad town, Lynchburg’s passenger rail station offers three daily departures to Washington, DC, just a couple hours to the northeast. The region is an hour’s drive from the University of Virginia and within two hours of the state capital and Virginia Tech.
Representatives of ten member local governments in and around the Lynchburg metropolitan area comprise the Central Virginia Planning District Commission. The CVPDC works regionally to advance economic and community development, transportation, and environmental quality. The CVPDC guides and supports the Central Virginia Transportation Planning Organization, the Central Virginia Radio Communications Board, Virginia Career Works – Central Region, and the Region 2000 Services Authority, which manages municipal solid waste for four localities.
The regional planner will contribute to and/or manage planning processes for Virginia’s Phase III watershed implementation planning, the PDC’s comprehensive economic development strategy, and similar projects related to community development, housing, transportation, and environmental quality. The special projects manager will provide grant administration and support the Central Virginia radio communications network. Cross-training is encouraged. The successful candidate will work with a team of professionals on-site and in Central Virginia communities and coordinate with staff of member local governments and community leaders to advance CVPDC initiatives.
The CVPDC employs thirty – ten in the administrative office in downtown Lynchburg and twenty at the region’s municipal solid waste landfill in Campbell County. Most are full-time employees with access to a full suite of benefits listed at CVPDC.org/employee-resources.
The successful candidate will possess two to ten years of professional experience in working in city and regional planning, public administration, business administration, or a related field. A Masters degree may substitute for one year of required experience. Position title and salary are negotiable. Salaries for these positions will range from $49,961 to $74,405. Excellent benefits include the Virginia Retirement System and an additional 457 retirement plan.
