Examples of Duties:

  • Advises the Assistant Planning Director, Planning Director, Town Managers, Town Council, Planning Commission and others on comprehensive planning, master-planned rezoning, demographic analysis, land use and transportation matters;
  • Performs and manages complex and sensitive professional long-range planning projects, research and analysis as assigned;
  • Manages assigned long-range plans and related activities under the umbrella of “Garner Forward” and coordinates with regional partners and neighboring local jurisdictions;
  • Reviews conditional master planned and other rezoning requests;
  • Participates in Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) subcommittees and special studies as directed and serves as the alternate voting member of both the CAMPO Technical Coordinating Committee and Transit Planning Advisory Committee in the absence of the Assistant Planning Director;
  • Coordinates activities with partner agencies including, but not limited to, the US Census Bureau, NC Secretary of State, NC Department of Transportation, State Demographer’s office, Wake County Housing and Community Revitalization Division, Wake County Planning, GoRaleigh, GoTriangle, and the Wake County Public School System;
  • Provides subject-area technical assistance and support to the general public related to the Town’s electronic review portal;
  • Assists in the identification and preparation of applications for planning grant funding as available;
  • Prepares and presents staff reports to the Planning Commission and Town Council;
  • Responds to questions from citizens and developers regarding long-range planning projects and rezoning cases within the Town’s planning jurisdiction;
  • Attends a number of evening meetings; and
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must:

  • have earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in geography, urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture or related field; AND
  • have at least three (3) years of professional experience in public sector planning or contracted public planning service; AND 
  • possess a valid driver's license

Preference will be given to applicants who have earned a Master's degree in urban planning or related field and/or hold current AICP certification.

Additional Information:

The salary range shown is the hiring range.  The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
