The Town of Morrisville is seeking a motivated, personable, and experienced planning professional to join the Town of Morrisville’s Planning Department as a Principal Transportation Planner. Primary responsibilities include serving as the Town representative on various regional transportation committees, serving as the Town’s liaison to NCDOT and implementation of the Town’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan. This is a supervisory position responsible for managing, coaching and mentoring the Transportation Planner II. The Transportation Planner II’s responsibilities include TIA reviews for development, management of the Town of Morrisville Smart Shuttle and participation on regional transit committees.
Remote Employment: The position provides the opportunity for some remote work.
Example of Duties
- Represents the Town on regional transportation organizations and steering groups, including various Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) committees.
- Acts as liaison between the Town, NCDOT and other agency partners on state and local transportation planning issues in the Town and surrounding area.
- Monitors and lobbies for the Town’s interest in the development of the State Transportation Improvement Plan.
- Works with NCDOT on betterment agreements for NCDOT projects.
- Oversees implementation of the Town’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan.
- Takes a leadership role in the development and implementation of long-range plans; prepares plans, develops and implements elements of the comprehensive plan.
- Performs and manages complex and sensitive professional planning projects, research and analysis including project management and supervision of complex Town planning and transportation projects.
- Provides GIS support by developing digital mapping and analysis.
- Manages the planning department’s GIS functions; provides GIS support to other planners and maintains databases.
- Researches, investigates and prepares written reports on planning policies and issues.
- Maintains town population estimates and demographic profile.
- Advises and presents to Town Council, the Planning and Zoning Board, citizens and other Town staff on transportation issues, concerns and projects.
- Oversees work of the Planner II-Transportation including but not limited to evaluation and enhancements to the Smart Shuttle transit system and review of development projects for conformance with the Comprehensive Transportation Plan and applicable regional transportation plans.
- Advises the Planning Director on transportation planning related matters.
- Assigns work to professional staff, coaches employees and ensures appropriate training is provided.
- Monitors staff performance and conducts performance evaluations.
- Administers, monitors and controls expenditures of subordinates.
- Attends evening meetings, as needed.
- Manages consultant contracts.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
