This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience with the Town's Long Range Planning Department.

 

Essential Functions

The Town of Wake Forest is seeking a graduate student or recent graduate from a Master’s Degree program in Historic Preservation or closely related field to intern with the Town’s Long Range Planning Program in the Planning Department. The Town of Wake Forest is located north of Raleigh, North Carolina and is home to one locally designated historic district, three National Register Historic Districts, thirteen locally designated historic landmarks, and eleven buildings individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Preservation Program is seeking an intern to assist with multiple projects including but not limited to conducting historical research of the African American community, researching women’s history, support for Historic Preservation Commission business, and participating in planning activities and special events. The central project will be research and documentation of the women in Wake Forest history, updating existing educational materials, and developing a plan for sharing the information with the public. Please note that the candidate must be able to read historic documents including maps, deeds and wills written in cursive with little or no assistance. Experience with GIS Story Maps is also helpful. These projects will provide an opportunity for independent and collaborative work in an office staffed by seasoned professionals. The intern can expect to:

1) Expand knowledge of North Carolina architectural history and preservation planning resources including design standards, historic    preservation plans, and architectural surveys.

2) Develop an understanding of the role of historic preservation in comprehensive and strategic planning at the local government level.

3) Become familiar with the goals and responsibilities of the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission and the daily duties of the Historic Preservation Planners.

4) Attend internal departmental meetings, public meetings, and events.

5) Perform daily administrative duties in support of the historic preservation program and long-range planning program.

 

The internship pays $18 per hour. The internship period is for a minimum of four weeks/160 hours and maximum of 12 weeks/480 hours beginning in May/June. The hours per week, number of weeks, and start date are flexible but must be completed by August 15, 2025. The internship period can be tailored to meet the college or university’s internship credit requirements. Please note that this position is subject to the availability of funding and not eligible for Town of Wake Forest employee benefits.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate Student or recent Graduate with Master’s Degree program in Historic Preservation or closely related field to intern with the Town’s Long Range Planning Program in the Planning Department.  
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and be adaptable to learning other various programs.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license and driving record in compliance with Town policy
