What You'll Be Doing
Are you a visionary leader with a passion for strategic planning and community growth? If so, the Wake County Planning Division is recruiting for a Long Range Planning Administrator who will provide solid leadership and consistent monitoring of programmatic outcomes for the Long Range Planning section. This position will manage and perform the implementation, application and enforcement of the County’s Comprehensive Plan and other applicable state and local laws to ensure compliance within the jurisdiction of Wake County, the largest county in the state. This position will also collect and analyze population and growth data, review trends and provide valuable insights for policy-making and land use planning decisions. This position requires coordination of activities within the Planning Division of Community Services as well as working with many internal partners such as Soil and Water Conservation District, Affordable Housing, Environmental Services, Health and Human Services, Budget and County Manager’s Office. Frequent outreach to residents, community stakeholders and municipal partners will be required on a variety of issues and tasks including preparation of demographic data and analysis, comprehensive plan amendments, community growth issues and county/municipal growth plans. The position also provides managerial and supervisory duties as it relates to the Long Range Planning section including program preparation, staff evaluations and resource allocation.
Essential Functions:
- Performs day to day supervision by providing direction to staff, analysis of section business practices, review of budget and spending requests, facilitation of staff moves and workflow efficiency, application of local and state policies and regulations and resolution of issues related to staff and customers
- Research's, collects and analyzes technical data for use in complex planning initiatives and projects
- Monitors demographic data and growth trends as it relates to the County's performance measures and growth strategies
- Manages the long range planning activities by applying land use regulations and policies in the review and approval development process. Interprets and applies the comprehensive land use plan and administers amendments to the plan
- Performs frequent outreach efforts to residents and community stakeholders on a variety of issues and tasks, including preparation of demographic data and analysis, land use plan amendments, community growth issues and county/municipal growth plans
- Manages professional staff involved in the development of the County’s growth management strategy. Performs employee performance evaluations and resolves employee conduct issue

The Wake County Planning Division exists to ensure that growth and development are managed responsibly by preserving the outstanding quality of life that all Wake County residents expect. As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for this approach increases. The Division is the County’s leading resource for collecting and analyzing demographic data and growth trends that assist with organization-wide policy decisions. The Planning Division works closely with Soil and Water, Affordable Housing and Environmental Services on common issues that advance each work program. This can include how Planning can promote farmland preservation, access to potable water, and preservation of existing affordable housing. The division is also instrumental in convening stakeholders that have common interests in advance planning projects. The stakeholders may include regional planning agencies related to transportation or other planning efforts. The Planning team recognizes that community engagement and stakeholder feedback are a critical step in any planning process. As such, team members are skilled at outreach and engagement practices.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
- Master's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture or related field
- Five years of experience in planning and development
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
- Certified Planner – AICP
- Experience with collection and analysis of demographic data and population trends
- Three years of supervisory experience

- Skilled in training, supervising and fostering team collaboration with the ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate data for program development and analysis
- Strong active listening skills gives full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions when appropriate and letting others fully state their ideas
- Strong analytical skills as it relates to data

Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 8:30am - 5:15pm, some remote work allowed
Hiring Range: 73,492 – 132,292
Market Range: 73,492.00 - 132,292.00
