The job selection process allows for the selection of a candidate at either the Planner 1 or Senior Planner position based on their experience and education. This is an excellent opportunity for Planners at a variety of levels to build their skill set, take on increasing responsibilities, and progress upward as a Planner, while working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Assists with the coordination and preparation of planning activities, reviewing permits, plats and site plans; ensuring compliance with ordinances, statutes and regulations; conducts research; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. - Reviews development and related land use permit applications, site plans, subdivision plats, etc.
- Examines applications for compliance with established plans and ordinances, and applicable local, state or federal regulation.
- Gathers, assimilates, interprets and analyzes a variety of data, requests and information pertaining to planning and zoning operations.
- Assists with professional and administrative support to Planning Board, Board of Adjustments and City Council as required.
- Receives, researches and processes zoning questions, requests and appeals.
- Assists the public with applications and inquiries.
- Prepares, issues and performs field inspections for items associated with permits.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning, engineering, public administration or a related field and 6 months to 2 years of professional experience in urban or transportation planning and/or community development activities.
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation, urban and/or long range planning; general knowledge of zoning and code enforcement practices; ability to provide professional staff to public bodies; ability to read and interpret blueprints, site development plans, engineered drawings and architectural designs; ability to gather and interpret technical and statistical information and prepare technical reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials and to the general public.
