What You'll Do:
As a Planner II, your responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing development applications for compliance with Town ordinances and plans
- Providing technical assistance to developers, residents, and stakeholders
- Conducting site visits and field investigations
- Preparing reports and presentations for boards and commissions
- Assisting with long-range plans and policies
- Contributing to special projects and initiatives
- Engaging with the public through meetings and outreach
Hiring Range for a Planner II: $71,543 – $72,500
Essential Duties and Tasks – Planner II, Development Services:
- Guide development projects through the review process and consult with municipal, county, state, and federal agencies to coordinate projects
- Perform reviews of rezoning, special use permit, variance, site plan, and subdivision applications for compliance with Town ordinances, plans, and policies
- Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations for board consideration
- Lead Technical Review Committee meetings for assigned cases
- Meet with developers, planners, engineers, surveyors, and the public to assist with town regulations
- Respond to inquiries from contractors, engineers, developers, property owners, and the general public
- Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans
- Complete special projects
- Perform other duties as required within this classification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Planner II, Development Services:
- Thorough knowledge of planning and community development principles and practices
- Knowledge of government laws, programs, and services related to planning
- Familiarity with current literature and recent developments in planning
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to think critically and exercise sound judgment
- Ability to interpret and communicate technical information in reports and presentations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, officials, partner agencies, and the public
Desirable Education and Experience:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in urban and regional planning, geography, architecture, engineering, or related field and considerable professional planning experience. A master’s degree in urban planning or a related field is preferred. Experience should be relevant to the assignment area.
Special Requirements:
- Valid North Carolina driver's license
- AICP certification required or must be obtained within one year of employment
- North Carolina Association of Zoning Officials certification required or must be obtained within one year of employment
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to physically perform basic life functions such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, grasping, and feeling
- Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects
- Must possess visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer, use measurement devices, and inspect land areas
